How Knowledge Moves

About Jacqueline Olich, PhD

A single question runs through every stage of this career.

How does new knowledge move between worlds that do not yet share a language?

Veza Alliance Management is a WBENC Certified Women's Business Enterprise.

It advises universities, industry, philanthropy, capital allocators, and founders, translating between discovery and capital.

Judgment Formed From the Inside

Jacqueline Olich's judgment was formed in three seats of direct responsibility, each demanding its own way of deciding, and each teaching something the others could not.

The first was entrepreneurship.

She co-founded Diba Industries, a family-owned company making precision fluidics for the diagnostics, life sciences, and medical device industries. As a director, she helped guide it through growth, capital allocation, and succession, and ultimately through its acquisition by Halma plc, a London Stock Exchange-listed multinational. The experience taught her fiduciary responsibility across a full founder-led lifecycle, from growth financing and facility expansion through due diligence and sale.

The second was academia.

Trained as a historian at UNC-Chapel Hill, she taught there as a visiting lecturer in history and later returned as Associate Director of the Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, a joint Duke-UNC National Resource Center, and as a member of the graduate faculty. As co-principal investigator with colleagues at both universities, she secured a Department of Education award of more than four million dollars to support the Center. She forged partnerships across the university's professional schools and with international partners, taught graduate seminars, and directed and read more than fifteen master's theses. That vantage gave her a working understanding of how ideas move through institutions, where they stall, and how institutions reach their decisions.

The third, which grew out of that partnership work, was executive leadership inside a global research organization.

At RTI International, where she rose to Vice President of University Collaborations, she built the University Scholars Program from the ground up into a portfolio exceeding sixty million dollars. The research challenges she designed and led, including Forethought, brought researchers together across universities to generate innovation and growth. She presented Forethought at a National Academies roundtable, alongside the organization's then president and a member of its Board of Governors, as a model for place-based innovation. That role taught her how to build structures in which institutions with different incentives choose to work together.

Veza is where those three lessons come together, applied on behalf of leaders and institutions facing consequential decisions of their own.

What Distinguishes the Practice

The practice brings direct experience from inside the worlds it translates between, governance experience in the boardroom and before it, and judgment about which relationships matter and when.

  • Fluency From the Inside

Veza's perspective is grounded in direct experience across universities, industry, philanthropy, and capital. That is the difference between describing how a world works and knowing how it reaches a decision.

  • Judgment About Which Relationships Matter

Veza offers judgment about which relationships matter for a given decision, whether institutional enthusiasm carries the capacity to act, and whether a partnership is viable in practice or merely attractive. That discernment, exercised on behalf of others, is what the four practice areas share.

  • Governance From Both Sides of the Table

Veza's governance perspective begins with fiduciary responsibility as co-founder and director of a privately held company through its sale. It adds nine years as executive liaison for university relations to the board of governors of a global research organization, regularly briefing the committees that oversaw that work and bringing investment cases forward for approval. The PDA® Certified Private Director credential formalizes experience gained on both sides of the boardroom.

Jacqueline Olich, PhD, is Founder and Principal of Veza Alliance Management.

She is a strategic advisor, a PDA® Certified Private Director, and an angel investor. Her current work reaches across universities, industry, philanthropy, and capital.

She serves as senior advisor for higher education partnerships to a capital allocator in digital infrastructure. She sits on the advisory board of Elysia Creative Biology, a biotechnology company moving discovery toward commercialization. As a member of Citrine Angels, a female-focused angel investing group, she invests directly in early-stage ventures across health, science, and technology. She serves on the American Historical Association's Ad Hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence in History Research and Publications, at the invitation of its then president, Ben Vinson III. The committee is developing guidelines for the practical and ethical use of artificial intelligence in historical research and publication.

She founded Veza to bring judgment formed across these worlds to a decision while it is still being made. The practice brings together the historian's capacity to see structure, the entrepreneur's tolerance for ambiguity, and the executive's ability to move institutions. She remains, by training and temperament, a student of the worlds she works in.
